Troubleshooting and its solutions

The acrylic sheet is soft before bending

When bending acrylic sheets, kinks, unevenness, and being too far away from the clamps can sometimes occur. So it's not straight and square with the end of the material. Problems arise when the heat source is not close enough to the clamp, and when the material is bent across the entire width of the acrylic sheet before the material softens evenly.

You have to wait for that moment when you feel the acrylic sheet is soft and allows you to push. Then, as you push up on the material, you'll feel it start to move around your hand, and then it'll move quickly.

The free point where the material can move quickly is when you want to shape it on a jig. If you try to force it to bend before it has softened evenly, you will not get a satisfactory result and the bend will be uneven.

Twisted bend

When you try to bend acrylic before it softens evenly along the width, it won't bend quite evenly along the line of the clamp. This results in an angled bend rather than a straight bend. Twist bending occurs when the material on one side of the strip is not ready to bend and the other side is softened. For this reason, ensure even heating along the width.

Bubbles and heat

Acrylic can be bent with heat without discoloring the material. However, if you don't heat the curved lines of your acrylic sheet properly, you may create air bubbles or permanent scorch marks that cannot be removed.

Therefore, do not bring the heat source too close to the workpiece. If you sing wood on a jig, you're too close. If you notice bubbles or scorch marks in your test turns, move your heat source along the turn line faster, or keep it farther away from the turn line.

NOTE: The distance and speed of the heat source along the bend line will vary depending on the thickness of the material.
