Product Description

LEYU Acrylic factory specializes in the production of acrylic thick sheet, thickness from 30mm- 800mm.

What do you know about acrylic? What is plexiglass?

Acrylic and plexiglass, is a material, belongs to the plastic substance.

The production process is divided into casting and extrusion.

If you’re in the market for cut to size plastic, you might be questioning the type of Acrylic that will work best for you in your home or commercial project. Whilst it’s great to have so many options, such as Cast Acrylic, Extruded Acrylic, Rod, Disc and Block, it can also be overwhelming to weigh up all the advantages and disadvantages of each type of Acrylic material.

Luckily, there’s not just one answer for every project, which gives you the freedom to discover the available options, ask questions, and finally make a choice based on factual research.

Within this article, we intend to provide a comprehensive comparison of Cast Acrylic Sheet and Extruded Acrylic so that choosing the right material for your project is easier for you. You can expect to learn:

Cast vs. Extruded Acrylic

Whether formed by casting or extrusion, acrylic polymers are synthetic materials that result from a chemical reaction between a monomer and a catalyst. Often substituted for glass, acrylic, also called plexiglass or lucite is lighter in weight by up to 50% with greater transparency.

Liquid ingredients mix in glass molds to form Cast Acrylic Sheet. Casting is more labor intensive, making it more expensive. Casting yields a harder, sturdier, and more homogenous product. Casting lends greater chemical resistance over extrusion, making it the preferred material for uses involving fragrance, lotions, or other solvents. Available in a broad range of standard and custom colors for a variety of applications, cast acrylic sheets is more pliable than extruded, less likely to bend, chip, or melt during milling. Because extruded material is limited in thickness, cast acrylic is a better option for larger structures, installations, etc

The production process of Cast Acrylic Sheet:

The first process in the manufacturing of cast acrylic sheet is mixing the raw materials in a vat. This includes:

Methyl Methacrylate Monomer (Liquid)

Polymethyl Methacrylate Pellets (solid)

Optional colourants

The resultant liquid is then poured between two high-quality sheets of glass. The two sheets of glass are sealed around all edges with a gasket to form a mould – the thickness of the gasket, and the volume of liquid poured into the mould determines the thickness of the acrylic sheet to be manufactured.

These moulds are then placed into industrial temperature-controlled ovens and heated – this causes the methyl methacrylate monomer (MMA) to polymerize and form long chains of PMMA molecules, a process called casting, which is where the material gets its name from.

The material, which is now cast acrylic sheet, is slowly cooled in controlled conditions to ensure that any stresses that built up during the casting process are relieved – this prevents the material from becoming brittle.

Clear cast acrylic sheets have high optical clarity, great chemical resistance, and are ideal for shaping and machining. Buy clear acrylic sheets online please contact Acrylic Sheet Manufacturers like LEYU acrylic.

Extruded Acrylic Sheet Manufacturing Process

Whereas Cast Acrylic is, or, can be produced in small batches, Extruded Acrylic sheet is made by extruding acrylic polymer over longer, more economical production runs.

The production process is continuous, as Polymethyl Methacrylate (PMMA) pellets are fed into an extrusion barrel which heats them until they are a molten mass. Increased pressure is then applied to the PMMA liquid forcing it through a die as a molten sheet. The molten sheet is fed to calender rolls, the spacing of which determine the thickness of the sheet and in some cases the surface finish. The continuous band of sheet may then be cut or trimmed into its final size.

As a result of the longer production runs, you won’t find Extruded acrylic sheet in the same extensive range of colours, thicknesses and finishes as the cast acrylic sheet.

Cast Acrylic vs Extruded Acrylic: Advantages & Characteristics

Whether Cast or Extruded, Acrylic is renowned for its exception optical clarity, strength, impact resistance and light weight (compared to glass), in addition to the material’s high gloss finish, scratch resistance, chemical resistance and ease of fabrication and re-polishing.

Cast Acrylic Sheet vs Extruded Acrylic Sheet: Advantages & Characteristics

Whether Cast or Extruded, Acrylic is renowned for its exception optical clarity, strength, impact resistance and light weight (compared to glass), in addition to the material’s high gloss finish, scratch resistance, chemical resistance and ease of fabrication and re-polishing.

Cast Acrylic Sheet:

Higher optical clarity and transparency

Greater dimensional stability and resistance to warping

Better impact resistance, less prone to shattering

Superior surface finish and polish

Offers a wider range of thickness options

Typically more expensive than extruded acrylic

Extruded Acrylic Sheet:

Lower cost compared to cast acrylic

Good dimensional stability, less susceptible to expansion and contraction

Excellent weatherability, suitable for outdoor applications

Available in a variety of colors and finishes

Can be easier to fabricate and process

Generally has lower optical clarity compared to cast acrylic

How to Clean Acrylic Sheet?

When the glass or glass mirror on the window is stained and oily, you can use a cloth or cotton to drip a little kerosene or white wine, and gently wipe it, it will be bright and clean, use a soft cloth or soft paper, in the water with alcohol or white wine After soaking the mirror, wipe the mirror first, and then wipe it with a clean cloth dipped in chalk dust and wipe it again.

If the plexiglass display stand with the gold rim is dirty, wipe it with a towel dipped in beer or white wine to remove the dirt and make it clean and bright.

When scrubbing the plexiglass display stand, first apply chalk gray water or plaster powder water, and then wipe it with a dry cloth after it is dry.  It is easy to wipe off dirt and polish.

Acrylic products are stained with paint and dirt, which can be easily wiped off with vinegar.

There is a large area of oil stains on acrylic products, first scrub with waste gasoline, then scrub with washing powder or decontamination powder, and then rinse with water.

How to disinfect acrylic sheets

Dilute bleach solution:

Prepare bleach solution:

Add 5 tablespoons (1/3 cup) bleach per gallon of water

Or 4 teaspoons bleach per quart of water

Use a clean, soft cloth (we recommend disposable cleaning cloths - Wypall L40) and apply only slight pressure.

How to maintain acrylic sheets?

Acrylic maintenance is an important part of acrylic after it is processed into finished products, such as acrylic furniture. We certainly hope that a product can be used longer, so in order to extend its life, please treat it with care.

There are the following points, I hope everyone will pay attention:

Acrylic will deform when heated at around 70 degrees, and it will become soft when heated above 100 degrees, so it should not be used in places above 100 degrees.

Acrylic polishing, if it is a small scratch, you can directly wipe it with toilet paper or a rag with a little toothpaste. If it is a larger scratch, I personally mind sanding the acrylic. If the product is sanded with sandpaper, the product will be scrapped. The entire surface is scratched, which will be worse.

Acrylic should be scrubbed with a soft cloth. Never use any cleaning agent containing granular objects, and do not use various chemical baths to scrub.

Acrylic is easy to crack, so pay attention to surface protection when taking and placing.

Acrylic has a large thermal expansion coefficient, so temperature changes should be taken into account when installing or fixing, leaving space for expansion and contraction.

If the acrylic product is not damaged, it can be connected with IPS adhesive/bonding methylene chloride type adhesive or quick-drying agent.

If you want the acrylic product to be bright and beautiful, you can use liquid polishing wax and wipe it with a soft cloth.

Conclusion

Like glass, acrylic panel is really easy to clean, disinfect, and maintain, but it is stronger than glass, so acrylic panel is becoming more and more popular. Leyu Acrylic is a leading acrylic panel manufacturer in China. We can provide plexiglass panels and fish tank aquarium products of any size from 20-800mm to customers around the world.

How does acrylic (strength-wise) compare to glass?

125″ thickness of acrylic is 2 to 3 times more impact resistant than double strength window glass, 4 to 5 times more impact resistant than wire glass or other glasses.  A .250″ thickness of acrylic is 9 to 10 times more impact resistant than wire or other glasses.

How does acrylic compare to other plastics in strength?

Polycarbonate is strongest, followed by PETG/PET, impact modified acrylic sheet, then general-purpose acrylic sheet.

What are the benefits of acrylic over glass?

Acrylic is stronger, more impact resistant, lighter in weight, won’t shatter, is easier to fabricate, and can be easily formed.

What about Thermal Expansion & Contraction of Plexiglas®?

All materials expand and contract to a greater or lesser degree due to changes in temperature and humidity.  Allowances must be made for these changes in the construction and fabrication of products;  for example, the expansion joints in cement sidewalks and on steel bridges.  Acrylic sheet is subject to greater dimensional change, due to thermal expansion and contraction, than other materials with which it is used in construction.  Acrylic Sheet vs. Other Materials Inches/Inch/F Acrylic Sheet .0000410 Aluminum .0000129 Plate Glass .0000050 For indoor applications where temperatures normally remain the same (+/- 20 degrees F), acrylic sheet does not generally require special considerations for expansion and contraction other than providing for a snug rather than tight fit since its movement is approximately .00984″ per foot length for each 20 degrees of temperature change.

Help! My plastic is scratched!

When your beautiful piece of Lucite® acrylic scratches, you can fix it quickly! If you can’t feel the scratch with your fingernail, then Novus® #2 or #3 should restore the finish. Otherwise, you will need to sand and buff the area that is scratched to return the shine (see the Solution in the next paragraph). It’s the same way we polish the edges of thick pieces of acrylic here at Emco Plastics – it works! This procedure ONLY works on acrylic. It does not work on styrene (like the colored boxes we sell) or on polycarbonate (Lexan®, Tuffak®, Hyzod®). They both look clear, but they cannot be restored. Ask about our Abrasion Resistant coatings.

What if I have a deep scratch in my plastic?

Sand the scratch with a #400 grit sand paper. Once the scratch is removed, wet sand with a #600 grit sand paper. Buff out using 3M® super duty rubbing compound and a high speed bonnet buffer. Buff out with a fine polish such as 3M® finess-it-II or Mequiars® #17 clear plastic polish and a high speed bonnet buffer.

How can you drill a hole in acrylic sheet without cracking the material around the hole?

The material cracks because the drill speed is too fast or there is too much pressure on the drill when exiting the hole at the underside of the acrylic sheet. Back up the work area with another piece of acrylic or plywood so then the drill can continue through into solid material. If using a commercially available twist drill, make sure it is ground to a proper angle of 60-90 degrees.

There’s a crack in my plastics! What do I do?

There is nothing more frustrating than a crack in a piece of Plexiglas® or Lexan®. Both of these materials are “notch sensitive”. By the way, so is glass! That’s why you can scribe and break glass (and Plexiglas®) along the scribe. These materials have no grain and therefore cracks can travel as they please. However, cracks can be stopped with a simple procedure. Using a very small drill bit, (1/16″ or so) drill a hole through the material at the end of the crack. That’s it. If it is a long crack, you might be able to inject some IPS WeldOn® #3 (Methylene Chloride) into the crack to partially seal it. If the plastic is on a sign, and therefore most likely opaque, you should glue a 1″ strip of 3/16″ Plexiglas® to the back side to reinforce the cracked area.
