How are acrylic panels produced

Acrylic panels are produced in two ways: methyl methacrylate (MMA) is poured between two pieces of glass and cured, or it is extruded out of polymerized MMA (PMMA). The two processes produce different acrylic products, however, they have similar properties.

Casting: Producing acrylic sheets

The process of producing solid sheets of acrylic is called casting. Liquid MMA monomer is pumped into a typical mold, which consists of two glass plates held apart by a flexible spacer or spacer. The height of the separator therefore largely determines the thickness of the subsequently formed sheet. The required volume of reaction solution is then filled into the chamber through the opening of this spacer. During this process, the chamber is held at an angle in the frame so that air bubbles can escape.

The polymerization takes place in a chamber. This means solidifying liquid monomer into solid flakes through a temperature-controlled process or a chemical initiator-controlled process. After polymerization is complete, the glass plate and spacer are removed from the acrylic plate. The sheets are then covered with masking film, cut to standard size, and stacked on pallets.

Solid sheets of acrylic with matte or textured surfaces are produced as above, using appropriate glass sheets.

Extrusion: Producing acrylic sheets

Acrylic solid sheets are produced using an extrusion process. Acrylic pellets or molding compound are melted in a heated cylinder and pressed through a mold by a screw conveyor that rotates in the cylinder, somewhat similar to a meat grinder. The acrylic solid sheet obtains its final shape and surface in subsequent calibrations, usually in a multi-roller calender.

In a multi-roller calender, the surface of the temperature control roller determines the surface of the plate, and the exit roll gap determines the thickness of the plate. After calibration, extruded acrylic solid sheets are covered with masking film, cut to size, and stacked on pallets.

Polyskin and corrugated sheets as well as rods and tubes are produced by the extrusion process.
