Transparent Acrylic Swimming Pool

Acrylic or glass?

This is a question asked by manufacturers and designers in many industries, including furniture, automotive, medical supplies, farm and recreational equipment. When transparent materials are required, design teams often must choose between laminated or tempered glass or acrylic sheets. If you are choosing between these materials, Leyu Acrylic will compare the two for you on several levels to help you decide which option is best for your project.

Similarities between Glass and Acrylic

From a chemical structure perspective, glass and acrylic are two completely different materials. While they are far from interchangeable, they can be used for many of the same things. Both materials are transparent, with a light transmittance of over 90%, and both can be made into larger panels. This is why they are often used to make windows, electronic screens, aquariums and car windshields. Beyond that, the two materials are vastly different in almost every other way.

Benefits of using acrylic over glass

If you're deciding between acrylic and glass, let's first look at why you might want to choose acrylic sheets over glass:

Product density and weight

A piece of acrylic weighs less than half as much as a piece of glass of the same size. This makes it easy to carry, install and transport.

Basic cost

Not only is the material cost of acrylic about half that of glass of the same size, but the costs associated with manufacturing custom acrylic components are also much lower. Acrylic is a thermoplastic, which means it can be shaped when heated without losing its properties. This means that shaping and trimming is much less labor intensive than cutting and molding glass, minimizing manufacturing costs and, due to the lighter weight, lower shipping costs.

Impact resistance and pressure resistance

One of the main advantages of using thermoplastics compared to glass is impact resistance. Acrylic is much more impact resistant - about 17 times more resistant than tempered glass - and most abrasive events won't cause it to crack or break. For some large-scale swimming pool or aquarium projects, acrylic will be the first choice, as it will have a higher ability to withstand water pressure and is relatively safer.

Safety

When glass breaks, it tends to break into large, uneven pieces with sharp, dangerous edges. Even tempered glass, known as "safety glass," can break into small pieces that are difficult to clean, and while they aren't sharp, they can still cause damage. Acrylic will not, and in extreme cases it will be better than glass.

Custom made

From shape to function to decoration, acrylic offers a variety of customization options. As we mentioned, it's easy to trim and shape by thermoforming, plus it can be tinted in different colors while still maintaining its transparency. The quality of the acrylic itself can also be altered through coatings. For example, acrylic scratches easily and allows UV rays to pass through, but a UV coating blocks them, while an anti-scratch coating (hard coat) provides additional protection.

Disadvantages of acrylic compared to glass

While acrylic does offer some benefits, it's important to consider that glass may be a better choice. Glass is more resistant to scratches in its natural state, while acrylic requires a scratch-resistant coating to prevent scuffs and scratches.

Additionally, recycling and sustainability are also factors to consider. While acrylic is a more sustainable thermoplastic that can be easily melted down and made into new materials, the process of recycling acrylic releases chemicals into the air. Glass recycling is cheaper, easier and gentler on the environment.

And relatively speaking, there are not many manufacturers specializing in the production of acrylic thick plates on the market. How to choose a professional and high-quality supplier is also a problem. Please believe that Leyu Acrylic will be one of your best partners.
